The most common mistake on a Colorado Trail Boss happens in the shopping cart, before anyone touches a wrench. Somebody buys a three-inch lift kit written for a base Colorado, bolts it to a truck that already left the factory sitting higher and wider, and ends up with two problems at once: less net height than the box advertised, and front CV angles steeper than anything the truck was built around. Then the boots start weeping at 15,000 miles and everybody blames the kit.
The Trail Boss is a genuinely good starting point. That is exactly why it needs a different build order than a stripped work-truck Colorado. Chevy already spent your first two upgrades for you. Spending them again is how budgets disappear without the truck getting more capable.
Start by being honest about what you already have
As delivered, a Trail Boss gives you a factory suspension lift over the lower trims, a wider track, all-terrain tires on a wheel package with reasonable offset, an automatic locking rear differential, and some underbody protection. That combination covers a surprising amount of ground. Forest roads, washboard, moderate rock gardens, snow-covered two-track — a stock Trail Boss with the tires aired down will do all of it without complaint.
What it does not have is a front locker, meaningful travel, real skid plate coverage past the basics, or any recovery capability. Those are the actual gaps. Build against the gaps, not against the internet.
Measure before you buy anything suspension-related
Before you order a single part, put the truck on level ground and measure from the center of each wheel hub straight up to the fender lip. Write down all four numbers. Every lift kit on the market advertises height gained over a stock base model, and your truck is not one. If a kit claims three inches and you are already up two, your realistic net gain is closer to one — and your front control arm and CV angles are being asked to work at the full three inches worth of droop regardless.
That number is the whole conversation. It decides whether you need upper control arms, whether your tire choice fits, and whether the truck will still drive well on the highway.
1. Tires, and only tires, first
Nothing else on this list changes how the truck behaves as much as rubber. The factory all-terrains are a compromise tuned heavily toward road noise and fuel economy, with a thin sidewall that punctures easier than you would like on sharp rock.
Going up one size to a common 33-inch equivalent, in a load range that actually resists pinch flats, transforms the truck. You get more sidewall to air down into, a tougher carcass, and a tread pattern that clears mud instead of packing it. On a Trail Boss this size usually fits with light or no trimming, depending on how you turn the wheel at full stuff — check yours by cycling the steering lock to lock with the front end drooped out.
Two things worth knowing before you order:
- Load range costs you ride quality. An E-rated tire on a mid-size truck is stiffer than the chassis really wants when unloaded. C or a load-range D equivalent is often the smarter pick unless you are consistently loaded heavy or running very sharp terrain.
- Weight compounds. Every pound of tire is unsprung and rotating, so it hits acceleration, braking, and steering feel harder than a pound anywhere else on the truck. A heavy 35 on a mid-size truck is not free.

2. Recovery gear, before you go anywhere the tires can take you
This is the step people skip, and it is the only one on the list that is genuinely about safety rather than capability. A more capable truck goes further from pavement, which means when it does stop moving, it stops moving somewhere with no cell service and no traffic.
The minimum honest kit:
- Rated recovery points, front and rear. The factory tie-downs on most trucks are for securing cargo on a trailer, not for absorbing a snatch load. Find or add real rated points before you buy the strap that will pull against them.
- A kinetic rope and two soft shackles. Kinetic ropes are more forgiving than a static strap and soft shackles do not become projectiles when something lets go.
- Traction boards. On a truck with an open front diff, boards are the single most effective self-recovery tool you can carry. They fix exactly the failure mode you have.
- A compressor and a deflator. Airing down is the free traction upgrade. It only works if you can air back up before the highway.
Build that out from recovery gear. A winch is a later, heavier conversation — it is a lot of weight hung off the front axle and it requires a bumper that can carry it.
3. Armor, before suspension
The Trail Boss ships with some protection, but "some" usually means the front of the engine bay and not much else. The things that stop a trip cold are further back: transfer case, fuel tank, and the rear differential. Rocker panels take the hit next, because on a mid-size crew cab there is a lot of unsupported sheet metal between the wheels.
Priority order that reflects what actually gets damaged:
- Rock sliders. Frame-mounted, not body-mounted. This is the part that saves you the most money over the life of the truck, and it doubles as a jack point when the ground is uneven.
- Transfer case and fuel tank skids. Both hang low and neither one is cheap to replace.
- Differential and control arm protection. Worth it if you run rock regularly, skippable if you mostly run dirt and snow.
Steel is heavier and takes repeated hits better. Aluminum saves real weight and slides better but deforms on a hard strike. Neither is wrong. Start with armor and skid plates and pick based on what your terrain actually does to a truck.
4. Suspension, done with the factory lift accounted for
The Colorado runs independent front suspension with upper and lower control arms and a coilover strut, and a solid rear axle on leaf springs. That means front and rear are two separate projects with different rules.
Front
Aftermarket coilovers on a Trail Boss are less about height and more about damping and travel. A quality coilover set at a modest height, valved for the truck's weight, will out-perform a taller cheap kit every day of the week on washboard and whoops. Set them low in their adjustment range unless you have a specific tire clearance problem to solve.
Past roughly two inches of additional front lift over what the truck already has, you are into upper control arm territory. Aftermarket UCAs correct ball joint angle and give back the droop the strut extension took away. Signs you needed them and did not buy them: uneven inner tire wear you cannot align out, clunking at full droop, and CV boots that fail early.
Rear
The leaf-sprung rear gives you cheap options and one trap. An add-a-leaf is inexpensive and will get you height, but it stiffens an already firm rear end and can make the truck ride worse unloaded. A full replacement leaf pack designed for the load you actually carry rides better and costs more. Lift blocks add height without changing spring rate at all, which is fine in small amounts and increasingly bad as they get tall — tall blocks lever the axle and encourage wrap under power.

5. Traction, if you have outgrown the rear locker
The Trail Boss's rear locker handles most of what a mid-size truck will get into. The failure mode you will eventually find is a cross-axle situation — right front and left rear in the air, open front diff spinning uselessly. A front locker fixes that, and it is the single biggest capability jump available to the trim.
It is also an axle-out job with real cost, and a selectable front locker needs air or electrical plumbing routed and protected. Do it when you have hit the wall, not before. Until then, traction boards and a driver who picks better lines cover nearly the same ground.
6. Lighting, last on the capability list
Lights are the most fun-per-dollar mod and the least necessary. That combination is why people buy them first. Once the rest of the truck is sorted, the setup that actually helps at night is a pair of ditch lights aimed wide for spotting eyes and trail edges, plus rock lights if you spot for other people. A single enormous bar aimed straight ahead mostly illuminates the dust you are driving through.
Wire everything through a relay and a fused circuit. Modern trucks do not have spare capacity to hijack. Options live in offroad LED lighting.
The payload math nobody wants to do
Mid-size trucks have modest payload ratings, and the door jamb sticker is not a suggestion. Steel bumpers, sliders, skid plates, a winch, a rooftop tent, and a full bed rack can consume most of it before a single passenger gets in. You are not going to break the truck in one trip, but you will find the ceiling faster than you expect, and the symptoms are a squatting rear end, poor braking, and a truck that handles badly when it matters.
Weigh your build occasionally. Buy the aluminum version of things you do not need to be steel. Leave the bed rack off until you have a reason for it.
What to skip on a Trail Boss
- Leveling kits. The truck is already leveled relative to a base model. Adding another one usually just costs you front travel.
- Regearing, in most cases. The modern eight-speed's ratio spread absorbs a one-size tire increase better than an old four-speed ever did. Revisit this only if you go to 35s and tow.
- Intake and exhaust, for capability reasons. They do not make the truck better offroad. Buy them because you want them, not because a build list said to.
- A winch bumper you have not needed yet. It is the heaviest thing on the list and it goes on the wrong end of the truck.
The short version
Tires, then recovery gear, then armor, then suspension, then traction, then lights. That order gets the truck more capable at every step and never leaves you with a mod that only works once you buy two more parts to support it. The Trail Boss is a rare case where the factory did the first chapter for you — the win is not repeating it.
Start where the biggest change is. Pick your size and load range in tires, and sort the suspension once you know exactly what you are already sitting on.
