Ouray and the Alpine Loop: What a First Colorado High-Country Trip Actually Takes

Most people plan their first Ouray trip around the wrong problem. They see photos of Black Bear Pass, decide Colorado is Moab with pine trees, and show up with 35s and a rear locker. Then they spend three days on roads where the hardest thing in front of them is a ten-foot-wide shelf with several hundred feet of air off the passenger door, and the tires never once leave the ground.

The San Juan Mountains do not test articulation. They test your cooling system, your brakes, your fuel range, your tolerance for exposure, and your willingness to turn around. A stock 4Runner on decent all-terrains can run most of the famous mileage. A built rig with a nervous driver cannot. That gap is the whole story of wheeling in southwest Colorado.

What the Alpine Loop actually is

The Alpine Loop is a roughly 65-mile backcountry byway linking three old mining towns: Ouray on the west, Silverton in the middle, and Lake City on the east. The loop crosses two high passes, Engineer at about 12,800 feet and Cinnamon at roughly 12,600 feet, and threads a network of side roads into basins that were mined hard a century ago and never really got cleaned up.

It is not one trail. It is a system, and the difficulty is wildly uneven across it:

  • The eastern approaches out of Lake City are graded dirt for many miles. Plenty of people drive a stock crossover partway up and have a perfectly good day.
  • The pass sections themselves require high clearance and real four-wheel drive. Loose rock, water bars, shelf sections, and grades steep enough that an open-diff rig with street tires will spin.
  • The western descents toward Ouray and Silverton are where it gets narrow. This is the part people underestimate.

That unevenness is why a single difficulty number for "the Alpine Loop" is close to meaningless. If you have not read our breakdown of how trail ratings actually work, do it before you plan a route here. A 4 in the San Juans and a 4 in Utah slickrock are describing two different kinds of fear.

The season is shorter than the calendar suggests

The single most common wasted trip is arriving in mid-June with a full itinerary and finding gates closed and drifts across the road above treeline. Snow, not the date, decides when these passes open. In a heavy year, high routes can stay blocked well into July. In a light year they open earlier. Nobody can promise you either one in advance.

Practical planning rules:

  • Treat July through September as the reliable window, and treat late June and October as a gamble you should check on before you tow or drive out.
  • Build a lower-elevation backup into every day. If Engineer is still closed, there is plenty to run down in the valleys and basins.
  • Expect snow above 12,000 feet in any month. It melts off fast in summer, but it can absolutely be on the road the morning you want to cross.
  • Watch the afternoon. Summer in the San Juans means storms build after midday, and treeline is somewhere around 11,500 feet. Being the tallest metal object on an alpine pass at 2 p.m. in August is a bad plan. Cross high passes in the morning.

There is no permit system here the way there is on some Utah and California trails, but that does not mean there is nothing to check. Gates, seasonal closures, and washout repairs change year to year, and the land managers post current status. Check it the week you leave, not the month before.

Which routes to run first

Start here

Ophir Pass. Connects the Silverton side toward the Telluride side and is one of the mellower crossings in the range. Still a shelf road, still exposed on the west side, but wide enough and smooth enough that it functions as a good calibration run. If Ophir makes your hands sweat, you have learned something useful about the rest of your itinerary before it costs you anything.

Engineer and Cinnamon. The two Alpine Loop passes. Rocky, steep in places, high enough that you will feel it, but technically modest. A high-clearance rig in low range with a driver who picks lines deliberately will be fine.

Yankee Boy Basin. Out of Ouray, gorgeous, and a good half-day. The lower section is easy. It gets narrower and rougher the farther up you go, which makes it an easy trip to size to your comfort level and turn around.

Earn these later

Imogene Pass. Ouray to Telluride, topping out just over 13,000 feet. Longer, rougher, and far more committing than the Alpine Loop passes. Not a first-day route.

Black Bear Pass. The famous one. The section above Telluride is one-way downhill only, and the switchbacks are tight enough that full-size trucks back up to get around them, on a shelf, with a long drop. People die on this road. It is not a rite of passage, it is a road with genuinely low margin for a mistake, and it should be the trip you take after you already know how your rig and your nerves behave up high.

Poughkeepsie Gulch. The one place in this area that actually rewards a built rig. The obstacle known as the Wall is real rock crawling, and a winch and traction aids are not decoration there.

Altitude changes your rig more than the rocks do

This is the part that catches people who have only wheeled at low elevation.

Power

Naturally aspirated engines lose roughly three percent of their power per thousand feet of elevation. Do that math to 12,000 feet and you are down around a third. Your truck is not broken. It is breathing thin air. Turbocharged and supercharged engines hold up much better, which is why a small forced-induction motor can feel stronger than a bigger naturally aspirated one up here.

What it means in practice: use low range earlier than you would at home, keep the engine in its torque, and stop expecting to power out of anything. Momentum you do not have is momentum you cannot spend.

Cooling

Long climbs in low range at low road speed are the worst case for an offroad cooling system, and water boils at a lower temperature the higher you go. Marginal cooling systems find their limit on Engineer Pass, not in your driveway. Before a trip like this, pressure-test the cap, check the coolant condition, and clear whatever mud and bugs are packed into the front of the radiator and condenser.

Brakes

You have to come back down everything you drove up, usually on a shelf road. Ride the brakes down a 12,000-foot descent and you will cook them, and brake fade on a narrow ledge is the actual worst-case scenario of this entire trip. Descend in low range, let the drivetrain do the work, and use the brakes in firm short applications instead of constant pressure.

Tire pressure

Your gauge reads higher as you climb, roughly half a psi per thousand feet, because the atmosphere pushing back on the gauge has thinned. Set pressures where you will actually be driving, not in the parking lot at home. The rock here is sharp broken shale and mine tailings, which punishes thin sidewalls, so err toward a little more pressure than you would run in sand. Shelf-road driving is a separate skill

Nothing about a difficulty rating prepares a new driver for a road that is technically easy and psychologically brutal. Some things that help:

  • Look where you want to go, not at the edge. This is the same target fixation problem riders deal with, and it works the same way in a truck.
  • Know your width and your mirrors. Fold them in on tight sections. Know which corner of your rig you cannot see.
  • Uphill traffic generally has the right of way, but on a shelf the real rule is that whoever can back to a pullout more safely does it. Sort that out with a wave and a hand signal early, not once you are nose to nose.
  • Spot for each other. A person on the ground calling a wheel placement is worth more than any part you can bolt on.
  • Turning around is a legitimate outcome. The road will still be there next year.

What to carry

The failures up here are not exotic. They are punctures from sharp rock, overheating, body damage from a misjudged line, and weather that turns while you are above treeline.

  • A real spare and a plug kit. Sidewall cuts on shale are the single most common trip-ender. A plug kit handles tread punctures; only a spare handles a cut sidewall.
  • Air down and air up capability. There is no gas-station air hose at the top of Cinnamon.
  • Recovery gear you know how to use. Soft shackles, a strap, and rated recovery points. See our recovery gear checklist for the baseline kit.
  • Layers and rain gear. It can be shirtsleeve weather in Ouray and sleeting on the pass an hour later.
  • Water and food for a night you did not plan on. Cell service is effectively nonexistent once you leave town. If you are carrying more than jugs, our water storage guide covers the options.
  • A radio. Group communication on blind shelf corners is a safety item, not a convenience. GMRS is the practical default for a small group.
  • Full fuel. Low range at altitude eats fuel. Fill in Ouray, Silverton, or Lake City every chance you get, and do not plan on finding a pump between them.

Etiquette and staying legal

Alpine tundra above treeline grows back on a timescale measured in decades. A single set of tracks off the road stays visible for years and is exactly the evidence used when routes get closed. Stay on the designated road, including where it is inconveniently narrow.

The mine sites are the other thing. Most of what you drive past is private property, and the structures and open adits are genuinely unsafe. Look, photograph, and stay out of them.

A realistic three-day plan

  1. Day one: Base out of Ouray or Silverton. Run Ophir, then a basin road like Yankee Boy or Governor. Short day, sort out your tire pressures, see how the truck behaves up high.
  2. Day two: The Alpine Loop proper. Cross Engineer and Cinnamon, drop into Lake City, come back. Start early, be off the passes by early afternoon.
  3. Day three: Pick your commitment. Imogene if you want a big day, Corkscrew Gulch if you want something shorter and rougher, or Poughkeepsie if your rig and your group are genuinely set up for rock.

Three days is enough to see the range and not enough to see all of it, which is the correct outcome. People go back for a decade.

Prepping the rig

If you are building toward a trip like this, the priority order is different from a rock-crawling build. Tough tires come first, because sharp rock is what actually strands people. Then cooling and brake condition. Then underbody protection for the rare scrape. Lift and lockers are a distant fourth.

Get the tires and the recovery kit right, leave early, and turn around when it stops being fun. That is the entire formula for the San Juans.
