The most common recovery kit on the trail is a cheap tow strap with metal hooks sewn into the ends, a pair of unrated hardware-store shackles, and a lot of optimism. It gets used maybe twice a year and it works right up until the day it doesn't. Hooks are the part that kills people. When a strap under load lets go, that hook becomes a projectile with a couple thousand pounds of stored energy behind it, and it travels straight back through a windshield.
Recovery gear is one of the few categories where the difference between the budget option and the right option is genuinely a safety issue rather than a convenience one. It's also a category where people massively over-buy. You do not need a 12,000 lb winch to get a 4Runner out of soft sand. You need traction boards and the willingness to air down.
Here's how to build a kit that matches the wheeling you actually do, in the order you should buy it.
Start With What Prevents the Recovery
Most stucks are avoidable, and the two cheapest items in your rig do more work than anything else in the bag.
A tire deflator and a gauge
Airing down is the single highest-leverage thing you can do offroad and it costs nothing. Dropping pressure lengthens the contact patch, floats the tire over soft surfaces instead of digging into them, and lets the tread conform to rock. A truck that's hopelessly buried at street pressure will often walk right out at 18 psi.
Buy a deflator that lets you set a target and walk away, and a gauge you trust. Two separate tools, or one that does both well. The little brass valve-core removers are fast but easy to lose the core with, which turns a five-minute job into a flat tire.
A way to air back up
The compressor is the other half of that equation, and skipping it is how people end up driving 40 miles of highway on 15 psi. Underinflated tires at speed build heat in the sidewall and that's how sidewalls fail. A small portable compressor is fine for a single vehicle running 33s. Once you're on 35s or bigger, or airing up more than one rig, the cheap ones start overheating and duty-cycling before they finish the fourth tire. Budget accordingly.
Tier One: The Day-Trip Kit
If you run graded forest roads, mild trails, and desert two-track — the kind of wheeling where you're rarely more than an hour from pavement — this is the whole list.
- Traction boards. The most useful recovery item ever invented for anyone who wheels alone. Sand, mud, snow, and off-camber gravel all yield to a board wedged under the tire. They require no second vehicle, no anchor point, and no math.
- A rated recovery strap and two soft shackles. Not a tow strap. Not a chain. More on the difference below.
- A shovel. A real one with a metal blade. Ninety percent of recoveries start with moving dirt away from a tire, and the folding entrenching tools sold as "offroad shovels" bend when they hit a root.
- Gloves. Winch line and dirty straps chew hands up fast, and synthetic rope picks up grit that acts like sandpaper.
- A tire repair kit and a plug tool. A sidewall puncture ends your day, but a tread puncture is a fifteen-minute fix if you carry plugs.
That's it. Under a hundred pounds, fits in a duffel behind the seat, and covers the overwhelming majority of what actually happens on trails at that difficulty level.
Straps: The Part People Get Wrong
There are three things that look similar and behave completely differently.
Tow strap
Low stretch, usually polyester, often has metal hooks. Designed for pulling a rolling vehicle on a hard surface — a disabled car onto a flatbed. It has almost no energy return, so it does nothing to help a truck that's actually stuck. The hooks make it dangerous. If you own one of these, keep it in the garage for what it's for.
Recovery strap (snatch strap)
Nylon, roughly 20% stretch, looped ends and no hardware sewn in. The stretch is the point: the pulling vehicle gets a running start, the strap loads progressively, and the stored energy yanks the stuck vehicle free with far less shock than a static line. Nylon absorbs water and loses some strength when soaked, and it wears out with use — a strap that's been snatched hard twenty times is not the strap it was new.
Kinetic recovery rope
Braided nylon, 25–30% stretch, and a significantly higher energy return than a flat strap. Lighter, easier to store, doesn't hold mud the same way, and it's more forgiving of a mediocre driver on the pulling end because the load builds so gradually. It's the current default for most people building a kit from scratch. The downside is that all that stored energy makes attachment-point failure much more violent, so it demands rated recovery points on both vehicles — not a hitch ball, not a tie-down loop, not a factory tow-eye rated for lashing the truck to a train car.
Whatever you choose, size it to your vehicle. The common guidance is a minimum breaking strength around two to three times the gross vehicle weight. Going way oversized isn't a free upgrade — a rope that's too strong for the load barely stretches, which removes the kinetic effect entirely and turns it into a shock-loaded static line.
Shackles and Recovery Points
Soft shackles have largely replaced steel bow shackles for good reason. They're synthetic rope, they weigh a few ounces, they float, they don't gouge paint, and if one does fail it drops to the ground instead of flying. They also fit through recovery points that a steel shackle body won't clear.
Steel shackles still have a place — they're more abrasion resistant against sharp edges and they don't care about heat — but if you're buying one set, buy soft.
The shackle is only as good as what it's attached to. Before your first recovery, get under your truck and find out what you actually have:
- Rated recovery points are engineered and labeled for dynamic loads. Many trucks have them from the factory in front; far fewer have them in back.
- Tie-down or transport loops are for strapping the vehicle to a trailer. They are not recovery points and they pull out.
- A receiver hitch is strong, but only with a proper recovery shackle mount in it. Never hook a strap to a ball. The ball snaps at the shank and becomes a two-pound slug.
- Frame rails, control arms, and axles are not attachment points, no matter how solid they look.
If your rig lacks a rear rated point, a hitch-mounted shackle receiver is the cheapest fix in offroading. Aftermarket bumpers almost always integrate them, which is a real functional argument for one beyond the look.
Tier Two: When You Wheel Alone or Get Remote
Everything above assumes there's a second vehicle. Once you're wheeling solo, or running trails where a self-recovery is likely, the list grows.
A winch
A winch is the answer to "there is nobody here to pull me." It is not a substitute for traction boards on sand, where there's often nothing to anchor to anyway.
Sizing: the rule of thumb is a rated line pull of about 1.5 times gross vehicle weight, and most mid-size and full-size trucks land on 10,000–12,000 lb units. Two things people forget. First, rated pull is on the first layer of the drum — pull capacity drops meaningfully as line stacks up, sometimes by a third or more at the outer wrap. Second, a winch draws enormous current, and a marginal battery and alternator will leave you with a dead truck at the end of a long pull. If you winch regularly, that's the actual argument for a dual battery setup, not the fridge.
Synthetic line versus steel cable: synthetic is lighter, safer when it fails, and easier to handle without gloves getting shredded. It degrades in UV and abrades against rock, so it needs inspection and a decent fairlead. Steel is tougher against abrasion and cheaper, but it stores energy and whips when it breaks. Most people building new go synthetic.
The winch support kit
A winch by itself is half a system. You also want:
- A tree saver strap — wide, flat webbing that wraps an anchor without girdling it. Never wrap bare winch line around a tree.
- A snatch block or pulley — doubles your pulling power and lets you change the direction of pull. This is the accessory that most often turns an impossible recovery into a routine one.
- A damper — a weighted blanket thrown over the line mid-span. If the line lets go, it drops instead of whipping. A jacket works in a pinch.
- A long extension strap — because the only anchor is always fifteen feet past the end of your line.
A jack that works in dirt
The factory bottle jack is designed for a paved shoulder and will sink or tip on a trail. A high-lift is versatile and can be used to winch, lift, and spread, but it is genuinely the most dangerous tool most people carry — the handle comes down hard and fast when a load shifts. Learn it in a parking lot before you need it at night. An offroad-rated bottle jack or an exhaust bag is safer for the single job of changing a tire, which is what you'll actually use it for.
The Stuff That Isn't Recovery Gear But Ends the Trip Anyway
A recovery kit that gets you unstuck but leaves you stranded isn't finished. Round it out with a real first aid kit you've opened at least once, a jump pack, basic hand tools plus whatever sizes your specific rig uses, spare fuses and a roll of self-fusing tape, a headlamp, and more water than you think you need. Communication matters more than most of the hardware — cell coverage disappears fast, and a satellite messenger or a radio is what turns a bad night into an inconvenience.
Practice Before You Need It
The gap between owning recovery gear and being able to use it is bigger than people expect. Rig a winch pull in a field. Find your recovery points in daylight with clean hands, not in the dark in six inches of mud. Learn what your traction boards do at 30 psi versus 15 — the difference will surprise you, and it's the same lesson that shows up in choosing the right tire in the first place.
And build the habit of the pre-recovery pause. Before anything gets tensioned: everyone not driving stands well clear and off to the side, never in line with the strap. Windows up. Check both attachment points by hand. Agree on hand signals. Thirty seconds of that prevents nearly every recovery injury there is.
Gear that lives in the truck and never gets touched is doing its job. Just make sure it's the right gear, rated for what you're asking of it, and that you know how to use it before the day comes when you have to.
