Ask someone what lighting they're running and they'll usually tell you about the bar. Ask what they actually use most on a night trail and, if they're honest, it's the small lights: the ones under the fenders showing where a tire is about to land, and the ones on the hood hinges lighting the trail edge.
Rock, ditch, and chase lights each solve a specific problem that a forward-facing bar cannot solve at all. Here's what each one is actually for.
Rock lights
Small, low-output flood lights mounted under the vehicle, typically inside the wheel wells and along the frame rails, pointed at the ground and the tires.
What they're for
Tire placement. On technical terrain, the difference between a clean line and a pinched sidewall is whether you can see exactly where the tire is going to sit. From the driver's seat you cannot see your own front tire, and no forward-facing light illuminates the ground directly beneath the fender.
They also earn their keep at camp, when you drop a socket, and any time you need to look at something underneath the vehicle without holding a flashlight in your teeth.
Practical notes
- Low draw. You can run a full set on a small circuit.
- Mount them where they're shielded from direct rock strikes. Inside the wheel well lip and along the inner frame is better than hanging below.
- Seal the wiring properly. This is the wettest, dirtiest part of the vehicle.
- Put them on their own switch. You'll want them on when everything else is off.
- Amber or warm white reduces glare off dust kicked up by the tires.
RGB versions exist and are fine, but the color-changing feature is decoration. Buy for output and sealing quality, not for the app.
Ditch lights
Small pods mounted at the hood hinges or on the A-pillars, aimed outward and slightly down.
What they're for
Peripheral vision. A forward-facing bar lights the trail ahead of you, but trail hazards come from the sides: the rock ledge on the inside of a turn, the washout at the edge, the tree you're about to catch a mirror on.
They also light the inside of a corner as you turn into it, which forward-facing lights physically cannot do because they point where the truck is, not where it's going.
For most people this is the highest-value auxiliary lighting upgrade available, and it's usually the third or fourth thing they buy instead of the first.
Practical notes
- Flood or wide-combo pattern. A spot ditch light defeats the purpose.
- Aim outward roughly 30 to 45 degrees, tilted down. Resist aiming them forward; you already have forward light.
- Hood-hinge brackets are usually vehicle-specific and bolt to existing hardware without drilling.
- Check hood clearance at full open before you finalize the aim.
- Amber works very well here in dust and snow.
Chase lights
Rear-facing lights, usually amber or red, mounted high at the back of the vehicle.
What they're for
Being seen by the vehicle behind you in a dust cloud. In a convoy on a dusty trail, the truck behind you is driving in a brown wall and your factory tail lights disappear in it. A bright amber rear light gives them a reference point and keeps them from closing in on you blindly.
This is genuinely a safety item if you run with a group in dry conditions. It's much less relevant if you wheel alone or in wet terrain.
Don't confuse it with a work light
A chase light is for visibility to others. A rear work light is a white flood you use to see behind you while backing or working. They're different jobs and ideally you have both, on separate switches, because you never want the white one on while someone is following you.
Practical notes
- Amber is the convention and is legal in more places than red for auxiliary use.
- Mount high so it stays above the dust.
- Absolutely on its own switch.
- Check local rules on rear-facing auxiliary lighting, which vary and are stricter than you'd expect.
How they fit together
A complete night setup covers four directions, and a light bar only covers one of them:
- Forward, far: bar or spot.
- Forward, wide and near: flood bumper light.
- Sides: ditch lights.
- Under the vehicle: rock lights.
- Behind: chase light for visibility, work light for seeing.
If you're building this out over time, the order that gives you the most capability soonest is ditch lights, then rock lights, then rear work light, then a forward bar, then a chase light if you run with groups.
Wiring all of it
Once you're running four or five separate circuits, a switch panel stops being a luxury. Individual fusing, consistent labeling, and the ability to add the next thing without disturbing what's already installed all matter.
Everything here should be triggered from switched ignition so nothing can drain the battery, and each type should be independently switchable. The wiring detail is covered in wiring auxiliary lights.
The short version
Rock lights show you where your tires are. Ditch lights show you the trail edges and the inside of turns. Chase lights keep the truck behind you from running into you in the dust. None of them replace a forward light, and all of them do things a forward light physically cannot.
Per dollar, they're the best lighting money most people can spend, and they're almost always bought last.
