The most common Tacoma build goes like this: three-inch lift and 33s in the same week, wheels ordered before anyone measured for rub, and a shopping cart that never included a shovel. Two months later the truck rides worse than stock, the speedometer is off, the front end clunks over driveway aprons, and the owner still got stuck on a wet two-track because nobody ever aired down.
None of that is a Tacoma problem. It's a build-order problem. The Tacoma is one of the easiest trucks in the world to modify — the aftermarket is enormous and the platform is forgiving — and that abundance is exactly what gets people into trouble. There's a part for everything, so people buy a part for everything.
What follows is a build order ranked by value, not by what looks best in the driveway.
How to judge whether a mod is worth the money
Three questions sort almost everything:
- Does it change what the truck can do, or just how it looks doing it? Tires change capability. Fender flares don't.
- Does it fail safely? A bent skid plate gets you home. A snapped cheap ball joint at speed does not.
- Does it force a second purchase? A lift that requires new upper control arms, a driveline fix, and a regear is not a lift purchase. It's the first payment on four.

Tier 1: buy these before anything else
1. Tires
Nothing else on this list moves the capability needle as hard per dollar. A stock-height Tacoma on a good all-terrain in the right size will out-drive a lifted truck on worn highway tires, every single time, on every surface. Traction is the whole game.
Two things matter more than brand:
- Sidewall construction. A tire with a stiffer, more puncture-resistant sidewall is what lets you run low pressure without folding the bead off the rim. That's the difference between "aired down" and "walking home."
- Size restraint. The size that fits with mild trimming and no lift is usually the smartest buy on a Tacoma. Every inch of diameter past that costs you effective gearing, braking, steering feel, and eventually money for a regear.
Most people are better served by a well-chosen all-terrain than by a mud-terrain. Mud tires are loud, wear fast, and are genuinely worse on wet pavement, and they only pay off in deep, sticky mud where the voids can clean themselves out. 2. Recovery gear and the tools to air down
This is the mod people skip and then regret in the most expensive possible way. A truck that can't be recovered is a truck that stays where it stopped.
The short list that earns its space:
- A rated soft shackle and a recovery strap or kinetic rope — not a tow chain, not a ratchet strap
- A pair of traction boards, which solve more real-world stucks than a winch does
- A shovel, and a tire deflator plus a compressor so airing down isn't a one-way decision
- A tire plug kit, because sidewall-adjacent punctures are the most common trail failure there is
Airing down is the single highest-value skill on this page and it costs almost nothing. Dropping pressure lengthens the contact patch, lets the tread conform to rock and ruts, and softens the ride dramatically. It does more for traction than a locker and it's free. You just need a way to put the air back. Everything above lives in recovery gear.
3. Underbody armor
The Tacoma's exposed underside is its most repairable weakness and its most predictable one. Factory skid coverage is thin and usually stops well short of the transfer case. A frame-mounted front skid and a transfer case skid are cheap insurance against the exact rocks you're going to find on your third trail run.
Prioritize by what's expensive to fix: engine and oil pan, transmission crossmember, transfer case, then fuel tank. Steel skids take repeated hits and can be hammered flat. Aluminum saves weight and slides better but deforms and stays deformed. Both beat plastic. Shop those under armor.
Tier 2: real capability, once the basics are covered
4. Suspension — done once, properly
Here's the Tacoma-specific reality. The front is an independent coilover setup, the rear is leaf sprung. Those two ends want completely different things from you.
Front: A quality coilover replaces the strut assembly and gives you real damping control along with height. A spacer sits on top of the factory strut and gives you height only — same worn-out damping, but now with steeper control arm and CV angles. A modest lift, roughly two to three inches, is the sweet spot where you gain clearance without needing upper control arms to correct ball joint and alignment geometry. Past that, plan on UCAs as part of the purchase, not as a surprise.
Rear: Tacomas are known for a slight lean, and for a rear end that rides harsh empty and squats hard loaded. A full replacement leaf pack designed for your intended load is the correct answer. An add-a-leaf is a budget answer that stiffens an already-tired pack. Lift blocks add height without adding capacity and increase axle wrap — use them sparingly and never stack them.

5. Rock sliders
Factory running boards are a cosmetic step bolted to sheet metal. They will fold on the first rock and take rocker panel with them. Frame-mounted sliders are structural, protect the most expensive body panel on the truck, and double as a jacking point when you need to get a wheel out of a hole.
Get a set that bolts or welds to the frame — not to the body mounts. That distinction is the entire point.
6. Auxiliary lighting
Lighting moves up this list fast if you drive dirt after dark or in dust. The useful order is: better output where the factory beam already points, then ditch lights for corner and side coverage on tight trail, then a bar for open, high-speed running.
Beam pattern matters more than raw lumens. A spot pattern throws distance and is useless up close. A flood lights the near field and washes out in dust. Most people want a combo up front and floods in the ditch position. Wire it on a relay with a fused feed and a real switch — a light that dies from a melted connector on night one was not a bargain. Tier 3: the specialist stuff
7. Rear locker, then gearing
If your truck came without a rear locker, adding one is the biggest single traction upgrade available past tires. It matters most in slow, technical terrain where you're lifting a wheel — exactly the situation where an open diff sends all the torque to the tire touching nothing.
Regearing is different: it's a correction, not an upgrade. Bigger tires effectively raise your gear ratio, which is why a truck on 33s or 35s feels lazy, hunts for gears on grades, and runs hotter towing. The threshold isn't a fixed number — it depends on your original ratio, transmission, and how much time you spend loaded or at altitude. If the truck drives fine unloaded and only annoys you on long climbs, you probably don't need it yet.
8. Storage and racks — with the payload math done first
This is where Tacoma builds quietly go wrong. Mid-size trucks have modest payload ratings, and that number is the total of everything: people, gear, fuel in cans, water, drawers, bumpers, and the rack itself.
Roof weight is the worst kind of weight. It sits at the highest point on the vehicle, raises the center of gravity, and hurts handling on off-camber terrain more than the same mass in the bed. There's also a real difference between a rack's static rating — what it holds parked, with a tent and people in it — and its dynamic rating, what it can carry down a washboard road. Read both numbers before you assume a tent is fine up there.
Bed storage is almost always the better answer. Drawers and cargo boxes put weight low and behind the axle centerline where it does the least damage to how the truck drives.
9. Steel bumpers and a winch
A steel front bumper and winch combination is a serious capability upgrade and a serious weight penalty — often a hundred-plus pounds hung forward of the front axle. That weight compresses the front suspension you just paid for, changes your alignment, and eats into the payload you were already short on.
Buy this if you wheel alone, wheel in mud or snow where self-recovery is the norm, or genuinely need the approach angle. Don't buy it because it looks right. Most weekend Tacoma owners are better served spending that money on tires, sliders, and skids — and if you do buy the bumper, budget for stiffer front springs at the same time.
What to skip, or at least delay
- Intake and exhaust. On a naturally aspirated truck the real-world gain is small, and an open-element filter in dusty conditions is a step backwards for engine life.
- A leveling spacer with no tire change. You've raised the nose, worsened CV angles, and gained nothing you can use.
- Wheels bought before tires. Offset determines rub, steering feel, and wheel bearing load. Pick the tire size, then pick an offset that fits it.
- Cheap complete "lift kits" sold as a bundle. The savings are always in the shocks, and the shocks are the part that matters.
The short version
- Good all-terrain tires in a size that fits without drama
- Recovery gear, a deflator, and a compressor — plus the habit of using them
- Front and transfer case skid plates
- Suspension, bought once, matched to how you actually load the truck
- Frame-mounted rock sliders
- Lighting appropriate to when you drive
- Rear locker, and gearing only if the truck tells you it needs it
- Bed-first storage, with payload counted honestly
- Bumper and winch, if your terrain justifies the weight
Work that list top to bottom and you'll never buy the same part twice. Most of the value is in the first three lines, and most of the regret in this hobby comes from starting at line four.
