Rear Lift Options: Leaf Packs, Add-A-Leaf, and Blocks

A guy adds a big lift block to the rear of his leaf-sprung truck to level it out, hooks up a trailer a month later, and discovers the back end now squats exactly as much as it did before, just from a taller starting point. Nothing about the truck's ability to carry weight changed. He raised the body and called it suspension.

That's the core confusion with rear lift. Height and capacity are separate problems, and the three common solutions solve them very differently.

The three options

Lift blocks

A block is a spacer between the leaf pack and the axle, held by longer U-bolts. It raises the body relative to the axle. That's the whole mechanism.

  • What it does: Adds ride height, cheaply and quickly.
  • What it doesn't do: Change spring rate, load capacity, sag, or ride quality at all.
  • What it costs you: Leverage. The block moves the axle further from the spring, which increases axle wrap under torque.

Add-a-leaf

An extra leaf inserted into the existing pack. It raises the truck and stiffens the spring.

  • What it does: Adds some height and some capacity, at low cost.
  • What it doesn't do: Restore a tired pack to correct geometry. You're stacking a new leaf into springs that have already lost their arch.
  • What it costs you: Ride quality, usually. Rate goes up unevenly and the ride gets harsh when unloaded.

A full replacement leaf pack

New springs engineered for a target height and load.

  • What it does: Sets height, rate, and capacity together, as a designed system.
  • What it doesn't do: Come cheap.
  • What it costs you: Money and install time, and that's mostly it.

Axle wrap, and why block height matters

This is the failure mode people underestimate. Under acceleration or hard braking, the axle tries to rotate against the springs, twisting them into an S-shape. Leaf springs resist this, but not infinitely.

A block lengthens the lever arm between the axle centerline and the spring. More leverage means more wrap for the same torque. In practice that shows up as:

  • Vibration or shudder under throttle, especially in low gears
  • Driveline vibration from constantly changing pinion angle
  • Rapid U-joint wear
  • In extreme cases, broken center pins or shifted axles

Small blocks on a stock-power truck are generally fine. Tall blocks, or any block on a torquey truck that tows, are where this gets expensive. If you're running a taller block, a set of traction bars stops being optional.

Never stack blocks

Two blocks stacked to reach a height is a genuinely bad idea. The interface between them can shift, and you've doubled the leverage problem while adding a failure point. If you need more height than one block gives you, you need different springs.

Which problem are you actually solving?

Diagnose before you buy. The three symptoms point to different answers.

  1. "My truck sits level empty but squats badly when loaded." This is a capacity problem. Blocks will not help at all. You want a heavier pack, an add-a-leaf as a budget option, or air helper springs if the load is intermittent.
  2. "My truck sags all the time, even empty." Your springs are tired and have lost arch. A block will hide it. New springs will fix it. Add-a-leaf is a compromise that works better on some platforms than others.
  3. "My truck sits level and rides fine, I just want more height and tire clearance." This is the one case where a modest block is genuinely the right, efficient answer.

Most people are in case 1 or 2 and buy the solution for case 3.

The parts people forget

Rear lift touches more than the springs:

  • Longer U-bolts. Required with blocks, non-negotiable, and they should be new rather than reused. U-bolts stretch when torqued and are not designed for repeat use.
  • Brake line length. Check clearance at full droop before you drive it.
  • Driveshaft angle and length. Enough lift changes pinion angle and can pull a slip yoke toward its limit.
  • Shocks. Factory shocks may become the droop limiter, which destroys them. Length matters.
  • Emergency brake cable and vent hose routing on some platforms.
  • Bump stops. Lift without addressing them can let the tire contact the bed.

Air helpers: the honest take

Air bags inside or beside the springs let you add support only when loaded. For a truck that tows or carries occasionally and is otherwise empty, they're often better than any spring change, because a spring stiff enough for the loaded case rides badly for the ninety percent of the time you're empty.

They are not a lift, and they are not a fix for worn-out springs. They're a load-leveling tool, and for the right use case they're the correct answer that nobody suggests.

Matching the front

Trucks leave the factory with rake, sitting lower in front, so the truck levels out under load. Removing all of it means the truck noses down when you load the bed.

Decide what you want on purpose. Dead level empty looks good and squats under load. Keeping a small amount of rake looks slightly less aggressive and behaves better loaded. Neither is wrong, but the choice should be deliberate rather than the accidental result of buying a front leveling kit and stopping there.

The short version

Blocks buy height and nothing else, and they increase axle wrap. Add-a-leaf is a budget compromise that adds some capacity and usually costs ride quality. A new pack is the only option that actually fixes sag and sets rate, height, and capacity together.

Figure out whether your problem is height, capacity, or worn-out springs first. Solving the wrong one is how people end up doing rear suspension twice.
